. an exclusive cbs 5 surveyusa poll of adults in california shows that 48% believe romney won compared with 34% for president obama. 18% felt there was no clear winner. last night's forum in colorado focused mainly on the economy and other domestic issues. that debate took place at the university of denver, colorado being a big swing state in this election, as well. the focus of the debate was the economy. but big bird somehow got into the dialogue there. and, of course, as we mentioned, there were some polls that showed that romney came out ahead of the president on that first debate. bigad shaban joins us live from denver with some highlights from last night. [ pause ] >> reporter: good morning. it seems mitt romney may have got the boost he was hoping for after putting the president on the defensive all night. romney you wanted to his own successes as massachusetts governor but highlighted what he called the failed promises of the obama administration. >>> reporter: the first presidential debate started with a handshake and a romantic moment. >> 20 years ago, i became the luckiest man on ea
spoke with cbs5. >> once they were in the water, they started getting pounded by additional waves. and two actually made it to shore and two are still outstanding. the problem was a delay in the search. it happened at 10:00, but one of the suspects were self- rescued. able to crawl to make their way up to the farmhouse where we are at right now and call 911. so there is about an hour delay. >> reporter: the boat left the candle stick marina about 5:30 this morning. taken out to the golden gate and about two miles north. it was there that the boat was struck by the wave. and the sergeant gonzalez says that it was about an hour later that a call came into the sheriff's office. the coast guard sent aircrafts and two boats, an 87 boater and a smaller boat. they joined in on the operations, including the state parks, san mateo county fire and the california office of the emergency services. at sunset, the search continued with boats, helicopters, and a c130 aircraft, topping flares into the -- dropping flares into the ocean to see which way the currents would carry them. on the coast,

>>> you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news in high- definition. >>> good evening. we begin with breaking news. it is slow-going traffic on highway 101 in the peninsula following a shooting. a crash involving an apparent shooting victim was reported in the southbound lane. around 3:30 this afternoon. this is near the holly street exit in san carlos. the car was seen swerving before it went off of the highway. several lanes remain blocked. investigators are not sure when they will reopen the highway. >>> also happening right now, crews are searching for fisherman lost at sea after their boat capsized. it happened at pigeon point. now, just south of pascedaro. we have more on what happened and the latest on the search, john? >> reporter: as we under stand it, at 5:30 this morning, four men in a boat at candlestick marina, headed out from the golden gate, two miles of pigeon point. at that point, something happened. a rogue wave hit the boat and knocked four men into the water. two of them were wearing life vests and two were not. the sheriff's sergeant john gonzalez has more.
